A sinister plot by the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) to cow people in the Volta Region through sponsored armed robbery incidents and dumping of dead bodies on streets has been leaked in an internal memo reportedly authored by the party’s Acting National Chairman, Freddie Blay.
This paper cannot immediately authenticate the leaked NPP memo, but memo which is going viral on social media, has the letterhead of the party and dated May 18, 2016. It also carries the signature of Freddie Blay.
The plans, according to insiders, is to give an impression of untold hardship in the country and particularly in the Volta Region which is incidentally the political stronghold of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC). It is believed that the strategy is a grand plan for the NPP to break into the stronghold of the NDC.
In the memo, Freddie Blay purportedly wrote: “Volta region is the stronghold of the NDC, in other for the NPP to make any meaningful inroad, it is imperative for us to create an atmosphere of fear and panic in the region.”
The memo goes on to itemize the steps the party allegedly plan to take in realizing its objective of snatching Volta Region from the NDC. The plans include: sponsoring frequent armed robbery incidents in the region, dumping of dead bodies in the region, luring local radio stations to run down the NDC government’s projects in the region and to organize series of demonstrations in the region.
According to the intercepted memo, an impression should be given that the opposition NPP was gaining grounds against the NDC in the region through a two-pronged approach of constantly referring to the alleged corruption in the Mahama administration and matching it with organizing massive crowds to follow the NPP flagbearer, Nana Akufo Addo whenever he is in the Volta Region.“Make them talk more about the high level of corruption in the Mahama led administration…There should be constant busing of people from other regions and constituencies to follow the flagbearer whenever he is in the Volta Region,” the leaked memo read.
This leakage has coincided with last week’s four-day tour of Akufo Addo in the Volta Region. On his trip, he visited areas such as Aflao, South and Central Tongu among others, where he called on the people to have confidence in the party and vote massively for the NPP to win the elections and put Ghana back to economic prosperity. He said the economic challenges facing the country are as a result of poor policies and weak leadership and that he has what it takes to bring the economy back on track and create jobs for the teeming youth of the country.GhanaPoliticsOnline.com
His statements and the reception he received appeared to have been exactly as has been prescribed in the leaked memo.
However, Communications Minister, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah has brushed aside any threat to the ruling party, saying Akufo Addo did not have what it takes to convince the people of the Volta Region to vote for the NPP, particularly given when the monumental projects
According to Dr. Boamah, the highest votes a Nana Addo¬ led NPP can achieve for the NPP in Volta will be around 6 to 7 percent in the November general elections.
