What Mahama said about sports -SoNA

President John Mahama on Thursday February 25 presented his last State of the Nation Address for his first term of office to parliament in accordance with Article 67 of the 1992 Constitution.

The president spoke on a variety of issues in his address of more than three hours.

On sports, he revealed a new stadium will be constructed at New Edubiase and called for the reintegration of physical education and sports into the school curricula.

Below is the president’s address on sports:

Mr Speaker, the Cape Coast Stadium is almost completed and I shall have the honour of commissioning it soon.

We have also completed the drawings and bills of quantities for the construction of the New Edubiase Stadium,” he said.

Mr Speaker, last September Ghana participated in the 2015 All African Games held in Congo Brazzaville and won a total of 19 medals. Our women’s football team must be commended for winning the football trophy.

Mr Speaker, the senior national football team, the Black Stars, placed second in the AFCON held in Equatorial Guinea in January 2015 and the Black Satellites placed thirrd in the Orange African U-20 AFCON held in Senegal last year.

Mr Speaker, government commits to the implementation of the findings and recommendations of the World Cup Commission even as we confront the legal hurdles ahead,” he revealed.

A new boxing gym and sports complex is being built by SSNIT near the Korle lagoon and will be commissioned this year. This will give the opportunity for young people in Bukom and other surrounding areas who have a talent for boxing to realise their dreams.
