Today Is World Teachers’ Day

UNESCO proclaimed 5 October to be World Teachers’ Day in 1994, celebrating the great step made for teachers on October 5, 1966, when a special intergovernmental conference convened by UNESCO in Paris adopted the UNESCO/ILO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers, in cooperation with the ILO.

This recommendation sets forth the rights and responsibilities of teachers as well as international standards for their initial preparation and further education, recruitment, employment, teaching and learning conditions.

Since its adoption, the Recommendation has been considered an important set of guidelines to promote teachers’ status in the interest of quality education.

October 5 also celebrates the adoption by the UNESCO General Conference in 1997 of the UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Higher-Education Teaching Personnel.

World Teachers’ Day 2016 at UNESCO Headquarters will also include the ceremony of the Hamdan Prize awards and a seminar with the Joint ILO/UNESCO Committee of Experts on the Application of the Recommendations concerning Teaching Personnel (CEART) experts.

UNESCO is calling on everyone can help by celebrating the profession, by generating awareness about teacher issues, by ensuring that teacher respect is part of the natural order of things.

It is also urging the global community to take opportunity of the day to discuss, compare, learn, argue, share and improve.

As part of the celebration of the World Teachers’ Day, GNAT selects a Needy School and some pupils/students in the host region to benefit from GNAT’s largesse.

The Kwanteng D/A Primary School in the Asutifi South District of the Brono-Ahafo Region will benefit from a 2-Unit Pavillion Classroom Block for the Kindergarten Department.

Fifty (50) pupils/students from Baniantwer SDA Basic in the Kintampo District and Mensahkrom SDA Basic in the Sunyani Municipality will be provided with school attire, school bags, canvas boots, textbooks and stationery to motivate them to go to school.

Ghana’s president, John Dramani Mahama who is campagning in the Brono-Ahafo region will join the people to mark the day.
