THERE’S NO KING IN GHANA, PEOPLE SHOULD GIVE US A BREAK! ~ NDC MP SLAMS ASHANTIS

The Member of Parliament for Bongo, Edward Bawah, has taken a swipe at the people of Ashanti Region for referring to Otumfuo Osei Tutu II as a king.

In an interview on Citi FM, the NDC MP expressed his disgust over the continuous reference to the overlord of Asanteman as a king. According to Edward Bawah, Ghana has no king and that it is wrong to refer to Otumfuo as such.

“I don’t get this at all. Why must a chief be referred to as king when the obvious fact is that we have no king in this country? There’s no king in Ghana so people should give us a break!” the Bongo MP said.

Obviously referring to the title of Otumfuo Osei Tutu II as King of Asantes and Asanteman, the MP uncouthly slammed Ashantis that Ghana’s Constitution doesn’t recognize Otumfuo Osei Tutu II or any other person before him as a king.

However, in a sharp response to the position espoused by the Bongo MP, Professor of History at the University of Ghana, Kweku Darko Ankrah, on his Facebook timeline has scolded and schooled the NDC MP and his likes on the fact that their position is wrong because Otumfuo Osei Tutu II is indeed a king.

“We confuse tradition with modernity. The Asantehene is a King. The Constitution made a terrible mistake on that”

The astute historian and lecturer continued;

“He is no small chief nor big chief, he is gargantuan chief of all chiefs. He is a King with a territory that transcends the borders of Ghana”

Kweku Darko Ankrah advised members of the opposition National Democratic Congress to desist from such utterances since their position is a far cry from the facts of the matter.

What Edward Bawah and his friends have glossed over is the fact that Asanteman goes beyond the Ashanti Region and that there are traditional areas and towns in other regions who are allegiant to the Golden Stool which has the Asantehene as its occupant.

Tuobodom, Nkoranza, Japekrom, and the whole of the Ahafo zone in the Brong Ahafo Region hold allegiance to the Golden Stool. Even parts of northern Volta are allegiant to the Golden Stool. Asanteman is a kingdom and so Otumfuo Osei Tutu II is the King of Asanteman.
