Editor-in-chief of the New Crusading newspaper has asked the leadership of Parliament to put an end to verbal attacks on the personality of the UK High Commissioner to Ghana.
Speaking on Multi TV’s news analysis programme, Newsfile, Abdul-Malik Kweku Baako said the leaders of parliament and other MPs attacking Jon Benjamin “are just not doing the right thing”
UK High Commissioner to Ghana, Jon Benjamin has come under a barrage of criticism from the public and some Ghanaian MP’s. This follows a letter from the British government to the speaker of parliament citing three current and one former MP for visa fraud.
The legislators acquired visas (some with false documents) for family members who failed to leave the UK when their visas expired. The letter placed a 10 year ban on entry into the UK on the MPs and changed the procedure through which legislators may acquire visas for non-official purposes.
Kweku Baako Jnr said “I’m clear in my mind that there were instances of misrepresentation that informed the applications that some of them [the 4 MPs] placed before the High Commission. Somebody says this is my wife, it turns out it’s not the wife; that’s a fact”
“We should stop this thing of seeking to play on the keyboards of people’s emotions by pointing to a foreigner. Did we[persons involved] do what he [UK High Commissioner] said we did or we did not?”
Abdul-Malik Kweku Baako in his comments suggested to the Speaker of Parliament, Prof Mike Oquaye, to forward the visa fraud claims to the Privileges Committee in Parliament or set up a special purpose committee to investigate the matter.
“I say this amounts to abuse of privilege and it brings the image of parliament into disrepute,” he asserted.
