SO DOES MAHAMA HAVE ANYTHING TO BRAG ABOUT? – JOSEPH INCOOM, LECTURER, DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL ENGINEERING FBC

It was six years ago that I bought a 4 runner jeep. I couldn’t drive the vehicle myself for almost 8 months even though I hold a professional driver’s license the past seven years. The reason being- I was just too scared to death by the erratic and unpredictable driving conditions on the city streets and roads. Added to that was the lack of courage on my part to face the terrible threat posed by zillion of manholes that have made the city roads their residence. In my 5 five years of driving in Canads, I never ever have to maneuver a pothole, not to talk about doing that consistently on every driving maneuver.

My new jeep received a hell of a battering and bruising. It is seeking to see that you could fork out over $ 16,000 from your hard earned cash to buy a jeep and then see it literally being maimed and ripped apart by potholes filed city roads and streets. That is certainly not the kind of prosperity any of us would wish to have on our agenda.

The condition of the city road network was so deplorable and terrible that there was a palpable outcry from every quarter. Opposition party members were even making mockery of the city streets by referring to them as Mahama fish ponds. The outcry grew so loud that local NGOs and some prominent Ghanaians called for the head of the road minister.

Fast forward, from 2014 we started seeing improvement in the condition of the city and town roads. The condition of our roads improved dramatically beyond recognition. Most of the roads and streets in the cities got significant facelift. Even my old 37 to La Trade Fair road, that normally is a lackluster and patchy whitewash maintenance during Burma Camp programmes, was/is a joy to drive on . I can drive on on that road at speeds of 40-45 mph, which is a far cry from the snail pace condition years ago.

Even the Keneshie-Nkrumah Circle, Circle-Achimota and Nkrumah Circle-Ako Adjei interchange, Kasoa-Accra , bastion of perennial traffic congestion even on thanksgiving free Sundays, had seen dramatic increase in speed and reduction in traffic jams because of the Nkrumah and Kasoa interchange (s) and the newly constructed roads. Today, there is a deafening silence of discontent about the conditions of the city roads. You can barely hear a whisper anybody talking desperately about our roads.

The only interpretation was that Ghanaians were very content with the massive road construction, rehabilitation and maintenance across the country by the Mahama administration. To this end, would like to dish out hearty congratulations to former President John Mahama and his administration for being able to accomplish this remarkable achievement.

In all my submissions on our road network, I attributed the improved condition of our road network wholly to the courage of the former President who acted when it mattered most.

Presidential (executive) power is unrivaled to any power in the world and history is littered with stories of great leaders using it to bring about sustainable and durable transformation in the socio economic lives of the people. Mr Mahama, in spite of the few mistakes his administration committed, worked so hard to put us in a position wherein we are now rightly regarded as one of the fastest growing economies in Africa.

Whilst we are now very hopeful as nation, we are cognizant of the fact that we still have a long way to go in achieving critical milestone in other areas. At this critical juncture in our onward march to socio economic freedom, we can’t afford to allow selfish and corrupt politicians to tether for too long on the brink of mediocrity, irrelevance and sub-par performance. Simply stated, we need appointees of the current administration to be firing on all cylinders if we are to meet our growing national expectations. It is quite obvious that there are many appointees of the current administration who are currently operating at comical levels who are stalking national progress despite the massive taxpayers and donor finds being lavished on them.
