PRESIDENT AKUFO-ADDO MUST TAKE CHARGE AND CALL HIS PARTY SUPPORTERS TO ORDER – GOVERNANCE WATCH (GWG)

Our outfit wishes to draw the attention of the president HE Nana Addo Danquah Akufo Addo to the worrisome situation where his party supporters and vigilante groups are violently besieging and taking over state businesses and their premises which is creating fear and panic among many ordinary Ghanaians barely 72 hours of his swearing-in as president of the state.

Yesterday, scores of reports and news circulating in the media, both local and international indicated that thugs and irate NPP supporters seized some number of state enterprises which included the Passport Office, the Youth Employment Agency, Ghana Ports and Harbour Authority among many others as well as chasing out innocent and ordinary Ghanaians occupying some state bungalows.

These illegal and violent acts which took place in a Rambo fashion taking many civil servants by surprise is generating fear and drawing unwanted international attention to the country with speed gaining notoriety and creating the impression that we are a nation of lawless people without any strong and responsible leadership.

It is therefore appropriate to learn from the steps of previous governments when similar situations occurred and how they swiftly dealt with them.

This phenomenon had existed for a very long time. Indeed, in 2001, when the New Patriotic Party (NPP) won power, youth of the party went on rampage taking over state installations. This was repeated in 2009 from the stock of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) moments after the late Professor John Evans Atta Mills was sworn into office.

However, in dealing with the challenge of the time, Professor John Evans Atta Mills issued a statement from his office and directed that appointees of the Kufour administration be allowed to stay in office until the expiration of a specific date and time. This had immediately brought to closure the unruly behaviors that would have marred our record as a thriving democracy.

Governance Watch (GWG) would immediately demand of the President, Mr. Akufo-Addo, to issue a statement, or cause to be issued a statement, a position of his government on the state of appointees as heads of state institutions – whether they pack out of office with immediate effect or stay their positions until formal appointment are made and files handed over appropriately.

We are of the greatest conviction that this would restore some sanity in our governance and call to order, individuals and miscreants who would wish to use this opportunity to unleash mayhem on innocent Ghanaians.

Thank you.
