Nuamah’s Mum Tells Mahama: Thanks, But GHC 20K Not Enough…“We Want A House

Georgina Opoku, Mother of deceased Ghanaian Times reporter, Samuel Nuamah, is pleading with President John Dramni Mahama to acquire the family a house.

Her request comes after the president presented a compensation and support package worth Ȼ93,000 to the family of the late Samuel Nuamah who lost his life in the tragic motor accident involving the presidential press corps on August 20.

Breakdown of the package consists of Ȼ50,000 into the endowment fund set up for his little son, 5,000 dollars (Ȼ18,500) for his wife, Lillian, Ȼ20,000 for his mother and father and Ȼ5,000 for his family.

Sammy died on the spot on August 20 – when a bus conveying him and other presidential reporters from Ho, in the Volta Region to Accra after covering the President’s assignment there, bust a tyre and somersaulted before crashing – other reporters including Peace FM’s William Gentu were severely injured.

In an interview with NEAT FM’s morning show ‘Ghana Montie’, Madam Georgina Opoku noted that though she appreciates the president’s gesture, the family’s main priority is to own a house.

“I would be happier if the president gave us [Mother and Dad] a house. That has been the call from the family and friends. We were expecting more than the Ȼ20,000 but we appreciate the president’s effort. We’ll invest and plan towards our future home. Ȼ20,000 can’t afford us a house,” she said.

Madam Georgina Opoku further told host Kwasi Aboagye that – “We don’t have our own house…and we are worried about that, currently we are renting a place in Accra. Sammy was our only hope in helping us acquire a house of our own and now he is no more. That is sad.”
