After snatching ballot papers and attempting to bolt with them when his side was losing the Speakership position, the New Patriotic Party ( NPP) lawmaker for Tema West, Mr. Carlos Kingsley Ahenkorah cannot be arrested for prosecution.
“Those calling for his arrest are primitive. You can’t arrest him like any ordinary man on the streets. It’s primitive to do so”, private legal practitioner, Nana Obiri Boahen said on Kumasi-based Nhyira FM monitored by MyNewsGh.com
According to Nana Obiri Boahen who is also a Deputy General Secretary of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), a Member of Parliament can only be arrested through due process by first informing the Speaker of Parliament contrary to what some Ghanaians are calling for.
“You can only arrest any Member of Parliament by first informing the Speaker. The Speaker has to be notified through writing then Hon. Carlos Ahenkorah can be arrested”, the outspoken legal practitioner pointed out to host, Nana Kwadwo Jantuah during a telephone conversation.
Hon. Carlos Ahenkorah has been in the news for a wrong reason after he was captured in a video snatching ballot papers and attempting to bolt with them during the selection of a Speaker of Parliament.
The Tema West lawmaker who became the ‘man of the match’ during the election of a Speaker of Parliament on Thursday, January 7, 2021, in a press statement has since apologized especially to his family and friends who have been affected by his actions.
“I did it for the grassroots who relied on us in power to survive, the president who needs some peace to run the country, and the greater NPP party as a whole because we cannot always allow the NDC to threaten and vilify us. I apologize though to my family and friends both far and near who may be affected by my actions.”
Meanwhile, former President John Dramani Mahama has called for an investigation into the turn of events in Parliament during its inauguration on January 7, 2021.
