NDC wins new voters register case against EC (Video)

The General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, says his party feels vindicated by the ruling of the Supreme Court in the matter challenging the Electoral Commission, Ghana (EC) on the decision to exclude the use of the existing voter’s ID cards as proof of citizenship in compiling a new register.

The NDC went to court asking the apex court to order the EC to allow eligible Ghanaians use the existing ID cards as proof of citizenship in the planned compilation of a new register for the December 7 elections.

Shortly after the Supreme Court gave its ruling on the matter Thursday morning, Mr. Nketia said the Court granted their request for the “inclusion of the existing voters ID card as a breeder document for the compilation of the voters register”.

He said the NDC appreciates the ruling.

“We’re most grateful since this is the most substantive issue for which we came to court,” he told journalists.

He again explained that their sense of vindication is premised more on an earlier ruling of the Supreme Court which states that the holder of an existing voters ID card is a citizen of Ghana.
