The flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo dishonored an official invitation from Otumfour Osei Tutu II to honour the grand “Akwasidae” festival slated yesterday, 24th April 2016. Experts say this very ceremony is exceptional in the sense that it marks the 17th anniversary of the current King, Otumfour Osei Tutu II . It is an occasion that brings together over fifty (50) paramount chiefs under the colossus Asanteman.
Otumfour Osei Tutu is the overlord of Asanteman, the NPP’s stronghold and as a conventional practice, the leadership of the NPP was expected to make itself present at this historic traditional event in other to show acknowledgement to the King of Asanteman on behalf of the NPP. As at today, a press release signed by Eugene Arhin , Press Secretary to the NPP flagbearer states that, Nana Akufo-Addo left Ghana for london on friday, 22nd April . The press release further said , Nana Akufo Addo is in London for a wedding ceremony of his nephew.
Eye witness present at yesterday’s colorful ceremony in Ashanti Region confirmed the absence of NPP’S flagbearer Nana Akufo-Addo, Running Mate Dr Mahamadu Bawumia, NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman Wontumi, Acting Chairman Freddie Blay, Acting General Secretary John Boadu, among others. The absolute boycott of this iconic event in Asanteman by leadership of the NPP under Nana Akufo-Addo is believe to be the highest form of disdain ever shown against the hospitable people of Asanteman and the Manyhia Palace.
The failure of the NPP to honor this official invitation is said to be an authorization from Nana Akufo-Addo to his party leadership not to honor the official invitation from His Majesty Otumfour Osei Tutu on the occasion of Asanteman’s great day. Scores of party members present at the event in the party’s stronghold were infuriated over this act of gross disrespect, contempt and neglect from Nana Akufo-Addo and Freddie blay led New Patriotic Party.
