NANA ADDO CHALLENGING HIS FATHER’S WISDOM

Since the quality of schools depends so much on the quality of the teachers, there is much discussion about their recruitment and training. In the past, there were complaints that they are drawn from too narrow a section of the community and that every teacher should turn to another job before he begins teaching.I have heard different promises emanating from the camp of the flagbearer of the Npp including promise to restore teacher trainees allowance and that of nurses.I have always questioned the ideological sincerity of Nana Addo because, all the major policies he’s rolled out ever since taking over as leader of the Npp practically contradict the traditional beliefs and position of his tradition.

His father Mr Edward Akufo-Addo was appointed Chairman of the Political Committee of the NLC led by Akwasi Amankwa Afrifa. His closest political ally Busia was appointed to NLC’s cabinet as Head of Civic Education, and was in charge of policy formulation. The two men played major role in all policies implemented by that regime. The irony is that Nana’s father supported by Busia and aided technically by H.O Donkor and Mr Ayeh, were the first group of politicians to have suggested the scrapping of Teacher Trainees allowance.A major statement issued on this policy by Afrifa was drafted by Busia and his partners. This was the order issued by Afrifa flanked by Akufo-Addo Busia and others

“It was unwise to continue to pay allowances to teacher trainess”Allowances to teachers were immediately withdrawn.I don’t think Nana Addo per his current position,is challenging the wisdom of his father.www.GhanaPoliticsOnline.Com

Another interesting point is that,Nana Addo’s father as the ceremonial President, supervised the cancellation of free university education for the loan scheme system which was vehemently opposed by the regime leading to arrest and detention of some student leaders.

The first austerity measures introduced in this country after independence was stubbornly pushed by the PP administration which was headed by Edward Akufo-Addo to the extent that the army who supported them at a point were seriously affected. The defense budget was seriously affected.

His Ivory Coast politics is another problem. The PP administration per its ideological inclination should have been daredevils in understanding of free market forces but the regime after one year in office, was described by the World Bank as having challenges with understanding how the free market forces operate. The world bank went on further to compare cocoa production in Ghana to Ivory Coast and its conclusion was that “bureaucratic incompetence in cocoa marketing board, and the smuggling of crops into Ivory Coast,As a result,Ghana’s income from cocoa exports continue to fall dramatically” That was the report the world bank released about the Government Akufo-Addo’s father headed.

History is just repeating itself the only difference is that the masses are very conscious this time so cannot be swayed away easily by the lies being peddled around.
