In the past few days, the mainstream media in Ghana has been flooded with news of certain individuals drawing comparisons between president Akufo Addo and Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah.
Tempting as it may be for us to join the train and offer our own individual opinions on this debate, we must however understand certain reasons why this comparison is wrong. Bellow is a list of reasons why the Nkrumah versus Akufo Addo comparison is wrong. Kindly read to the end add your opinion in the comments section.

First and foremost, it is important to note that Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah’s political ideology was far different from the political ideology of president Akufo Addo and the New patriotic Party as a whole. Whilst the first president of Ghana was more of a socialist, the New patriotic party of which president Akufo Addo is a member has always been a capitalist party. This therefore explains Kwame Nkrumah’s massive investment in state owned enterprises as compared to the new patriotic party; both under former president Kufuor and under president Akufo Addo’s love for the privatization of certain state owned enterprises.

Secondly, we must understand that Dr. Kwame Nkrumah accepted to be brought back to Ghana by the United Gold Coast Convention because he had an ultimate agenda. Osagyefo did not only plan to help Ghana attain independence but to also make sure of the total emancipation of the African continent. This agenda greatly influenced his decision making and he never gave up on that dream. President Akufo Addo on the other hand was born into a family of patriotic capitalists and has always proven to be more enthused with making Ghana great.

Despite Nkumah being a stout socialist, he at certain points employed capitalist ideas in managing the country’s monetary policy. The same thing can be said about president Akufo Addo who despite being a capitalist has on many occasions implemented social intervention policies from which a majority of the Ghanaian people are benefiting.

Clearly, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah and president Nana Addo Dankwah Akufo Addo have both proven to be great men who always put freedom and justice first in everything they do. They are all great in their own different ways and it will therefore be unfair to compare them to one another and try to downplay one’s efforts in favor of the other. We must always sought to celebrate our legends without necessarily drawing comparisons between them.
