Ibn Chambas denies visiting Bawumia in London

Ghanaian diplomat and United Nations (UN) Secretary-General’s Special Representative to the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Dr Mohammed Ibn Chambas, has denied reports that he has paid a visit to vice president Dr Mahamudu Bawumia in London where he is on a medical leave.

Dr Mohammed Ibn Chambas was reported to have visited Dr Bawumia, but a statement from his office has indicated that he is currently in Ethiopia Addis Ababa at the annual AU summit.

A photograph over the weekend went viral on social media depicting Dr Ibn Chambas and the vice President, but the Ghanaian Diplomat said the last time he met Dr Bawumia was in March 2017.

He said “I would like to state emphatically that I am currently in addis Ababa attending an ECOWAS conference. The last time I saw the vice president was in March 2017”, his short statement said urging “the general public to disregard this pictures.”

His denial of the visit has raised questions as to who is behind the circulation of the images and what the person aims at achieving in the end.

Dr Ibn Chambas served in the NDC administration from 1993-1997 and Deputy Minister of Education from 1997-2001.

He also served as Member of Parliament for Bimbilla, on two occasions, from 1993 to 1997 and 2001 to 2002 before he resigned for the ECOWAS position.

Dr Bawumia was flown out of the country on Friday January 19, 2018 on a medical leave to London.
