GYEEDA scandal: Court convicts Abuga Pele, Assibit

An Accra High Court has convicted Executive Director Philip Assibit of false misrepresentation over monies paid to him by the National Youth Employment Programme (NYEP) in 2011.

The court found that Philip Assibit made false misrepresentation when he claimed to have secured 65 million dollars for the NYEP.

The accused person is alleged to have been paid over 3 million cedis for securing the said funds.

The court however found that Philip Assibit failed to proof that any such funding had been secured.

The court has also convicted Abuga Pele of abetting the crime of defrauding by false pretenses.

According to the court, memos written by Abuga Pele demanding the said payments to Phillip Assibit facilitated the latter’s fraud.

The court said the memos contained factual inaccuracies aimed at forcing the hands of the supervising Minister.

The court further indicated that Mr. Pele in some instances advanced payments even before receiving approval from the necessary authorities.

Abuga Pele has therefore been found guilty of abetment of crime and willfully causing financial loss to the state.
