Governance not for ‘kalyppo sipping adults’ – Ama Benyiwa-Doe

A former Council of State member, Ama Benyiwa-Doe has slammed New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for sipping kalyppo fruit juice in public.

Addressing National Democratic Congress (NDC) supporters in Mokwaa in Twifo Atti-Mokwaa constituency of the Central Region, the former Gomoa West Member of Parliament (MP) said she has failed to see the reason why an adult like Nana Akufo-Addo and some of the leadership of the NPP would take to the sipping of a drink which is meant for kids.

This act, he said tells that the NPP flagbearer still behaves like a kid and hence would not be able to govern the party like an adult when given the mandate to rule.

“The NDC is not like some other party where children have taken charge and are leading the party with kalyppo in their mouths…Kalyppo is a drink for children, if you are a child and still sipping Kalyppo, how can we make you lead Ghana…we need serious minds to rule and that is the NDC…,” she said.

The comment of Ama Benyiwa-Doe comes barely a month after an image of the flagbearer of the main opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Akufo-Addo sipping the drink in between campaigns went viral on social media.

Attempts by some NDC functionaries to mock the NPP leader triggered what has become known in Ghana as #Kalyselfie.

NPP executives and supporters, in their bid to solidarise with Mr Akufo-Addo, circulated their pictures on social media, especially Facebook sipping the juice.

But Ama Benyiwa-Doe who is part of the Vice President’s campaign team to the Central Region insisted that is an act which betrayed the childish attitude in the NPP flagbearer and other members of the NPP.

She added that Ghana needs serious persons to govern the nation and that explains the reason why Ghanaians must vote for the NDC which has over the years showed that it is a serious party and can govern Ghana very well.

“Why do you think some of us who have been in the party for this long are here campaigning, it is because we know the NDC is the right party to bring development to Ghana…” she said.

She further urged the people of the region to vote massively for the NDC’s Parliamentary candidate, Ato Sam.
