Chief Justice Georgina Wood will become a member of the Council of State after she retires on June 8, President Nana Akufo-Addo has said.
The Ghanaian constitution mandates that “one person who has previously held the office of Chief Justice” be appointed to serve on the Council of State.
The current council has no retired chief justice because there is no living former one.
In announcing Mrs Wood’s replacement on Friday, the president said: “her public service will not be over as her place on the Council of State awaits her.”
According to him, Justice Wood was “extraordinary, and I pay warm tribute to her distinguished service to our nation”.
He has appointed Sophia Akuffo as the new Chief Justice to replace her, urging her to be firm and fair in the discharge of her duties.
“I expect discipline, fairness, integrity and the continuing modernization of judicial activities to be the hallmarks of her tenure as Chief Justice if she is so endorsed by the constitutional bodies,” he said.
