GEORGE WEAH TO BE SWORN IN AS LIBERIA’S PRESIDENT

Former football star George Weah will be inaugurated as Liberia’s new president on Monday.

The 51-year-old secured a landslide victory in last month’s election run-off.

Weah takes over from Africa’s first female president, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf.

In a tweet to his more than 60,000 followers on Sunday night, the president-elect said: “In the future months, together, we will need to work harder than ever for Liberia to grow stronger”.

His campaign was scant on details of reviving the economy, but he faces sky-high expectations from his support base of young Liberians who are counting on him for jobs to help alleviate rampant unemployment and poverty.

Meanwhile, President Jacob Zuma will no longer be attending the ceremony in Monrovia.

The Presidency announced that Water and Sanitation Minister Nomvula Mokonyane will represent him instead.
