Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s u-turn to fight illegal mining, aka galamsey, as President, after he had promised, while in opposition, to boost the vocation as a source of employment for the youth, has kicked off interesting collateral damage.
A self-confessed fanatic of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) and longstanding galamseyer in the Wasa Amenfi West District in the Western Region, has indicated he is divorcing himself from the ruling party.
In doing so, he is also pursuing the party to have a car that he donated to the party in the cause of electoral victory during the 2016 election campaign to be returned to him.
Kwame Akowua, owner of Agabus Mining Company, says he wants a Nissan pick-up that he bought for the party with galamsey money in 2016 returned and that it is an insult to allow the hoodwinking NPP to keep the same car which he had bought with galamsey money.
“I have realized that this government is a disappointment. The NPP government has deceived me,” Mr. Akowuah told Fox FM.
After the declaration, he requested that the station, play him veteran Highlife singer, Ewurama Badu’s popular lamentation tune, “Medofo Adaadaa Me.”
According to him, as a galamseyer, he had been inspired by Nana Akufo-Addo’s promise to never end galamsey, during the 2016 campaign, to buy and donate a Nissan Pick-Up to the party, through the NPP’s Amenfi West Parliamentary Candidate, Lawyer Paul Adekyi.
He explained that the car had cost him 350million old cedis.
However, a 360 degree u-turn to fight galamsey, by Akufo-Addo, after he became President has led to a collapse of his business, which employed some 603 young people, including ex-convicts, and a plummet in his finances.
“…Nana Akufo-Addo. As I stand here I’m dyed-in-the-wool NPP, I bought one pick up for the NPP, which my relatives are aware of. I have since approached the party’s leadership to request for return of my car,” Mr. Akowuah said.
He then made it clear that the President’s insincerity has helped him come to a grand epiphany: “As for me I can travel out, and return to express my opinion when it is time for voting – then I can take time and ascertain for myself, whose policies can help me so that I can put my weight behind him.”
Mr. Kwame Akowuah said his attempts to retrieve the car, so far, have not been successful but vowed that he would leave no stone unturned to get back his vehicle from the NPP government led by President Akufo-Addo.
Earlier in the week, the government stepped up its fight against galamsey, as the military deployed 10 platoons to illegal mining sites across the country.
The deployment is in keeping with the President’s vow to fight galamsey, even if it costs him reelection.
The vow to fight galamsey has however poisoned the credibility of the President, who vowed during the 2016 campaigns to never end galamsey because, according to him, it was a good source of employment for the youth.
Mr. Akowuah questioned the wisdom in the deployment of soldiers to fight galamsey, underscoring that galamseyers are not criminals but Ghanaian citizens.
Mr. Akowuah, who had been speaking on phone to Fox FM from Yaw Krom in the Amansie West District in the Western Region, said President Akufo-Addo has taught him a fine lesson that will inform his electoral choices in future.
Meanwhile the Dzaasehene of Yaw Krom, Nana Akoto ll, revealed that the Chief’s Palace for the area is also the fruit of illegal mining.
According to him, donations from galamseyers are what went into buying cement and other building materials to construct what he said was a beautiful edifice for the traditional authority of Yaw Krom.
He acknowledged that government was right in fighting galamsey in the cause to save water bodies of the country, but said the youth of his area too need jobs.
According to him, since the clampdown on galamsey began, the generality of the youth of the area have been put out of employment as galamsey
