Founder’s day to be changed from Sep. 21 to Aug 4

The President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has proposed legislation to designate August 4 and September 21 as Founders Day and Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Day respectively.
Both days will be observed as a public holiday, a press statement signed by the Director of Communications at the Flagstaff House, Eugene Arhin, has said.

Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Day will replace the Founder’s Day, marked on September 21 which also happens to be the birthday of Dr Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana’s first president.
However, the statement said the President has issued an Executive Instrument to commemorate this year’s celebration of KWAME NKRUMAH MEMORIAL DAY as a public holiday.
Explaining the rationale for the latest move, the Flagstaff said successive Ghanaians contributed to the liberation of the country from British colonial rule.
“It is, therefore, fitting that we honour them, as those who contributed to the founding of our nation,” the statement said.
“The most appropriate way to honour them is to commemorate the day on which the two most significant events in our colonial political history, that led us to independence, occurred – 4 August.”

Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Day is to honour the “outstanding role” Dr Nkrumah played to achieve Independence for Ghana.

It said: “It is equally clear that the first leader of independent Ghana, and the nation’s 1 President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, played an outstanding role in helping to bring to fruition the works of the earlier generations, and leading us to the promised land of national freedom and independence. It is entirely appropriate that we commemorate him for that role, by designating his birthday as the permanent day of his remembrance.”
