Expect your seized excavators when I become president – Mahama assures miners

Miners whose mining equipment including excavators have been seized by the  government during the fight against illegal mining popularly known as “galamsey”  have been given the assurance of getting them back

 Former President John Dramani Mahama has hinted that the next NDC administration will ensure that their excavators are returned to them when he is President

. Mr. Mahama made this campaign promise at Wassa Gyapa a community in the Wassa Amenfi East Municipal of Western Region when he addressed a durbar of Chiefs and people during his four day tour to the area.

The Former President also accused President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo of kicking people from the local mining sector and giving it to some key members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

“They have taken away all the jobs from you and have given it to a few individuals leaving the larger number of people while they tell us that we should go hungry. When the new NDC government comes, we shall make changes in that policy so that we will give back the seized excavators to their owners. We are all Ghanaians therefore we must all benefit equally from the country”. Mr. John Mahama said in audio available to MyNewsGH.com.

The NPP led government after coming into Expect your seized excavators when I become president – Mahama assures minerspower in 2017 launched a fight against illegal mining when the country nearly lost its forest reserve and water bodies to the menace.  

President Akuf- Addo after vowed he will resign from the presidency if he should fail the fight against the illegal mining.

Four years after becoming president, most stakeholders in the sector, some citizens and the NDC government have accused the Nana Addo led government of failing in the fight.

In all, more than 500 excavators including other mining equipment were seized after the Operation Calm Life was launched by government.

However, information in the media suggests that, some key members of the NPP government have already started using the seized equipment for either their personal use or released them to their friends.
