EC Boss’ removal: Nana Addo should have applied ‘home sense’ – Kwesi Pratt

Managing Editor of the Insight Newspaper, Kwesi Pratt Jnr has said that he is yet to come to terms with the circumstances that led to the removal of the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Chartlotte Osei and her two deputies.

According to him, the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, should have applied ‘home sense’ before carrying out the decision to remove Charlotte Osei from office.

President Akufo-Addo on Thursday night announced in a statement that he had removed the Electoral Commission chairperson, Charlotte Osei and her two deputies following receipt of the report of a committee set up by the Chief Justice, Justice Sophia Akuffo, pursuant to Article 146(4) of the Constitution, to investigate separate complaints brought by some Ghanaian citizens.

The provisions of Article 146 (9) of the Constitution require the President to act in accordance with the recommendations of the Committee, but some members of the largest opposition party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), have accused the government of masterminding the removal due to the NPP’s public criticism and opposition to the appointment of Charlotte Osei.

Charlotte Osei breached procurement laws

When Charlotte Osei was appointed, NPP people argued that the President should have not just applied the law but also used home sense but that was the case here, he should have applied the home sense here too because the integrity of the Electoral process was at stake.

Speaking on Peace FM’s Kokrokoo Tuesday as monitored by , Kwesi Pratt argued that although the law permits the President to remove Charlotte Osei and her deputies from office, he had to apply ‘home sense’ too.

The application of ‘home sense’ Kwesi Pratt would have helped the President to come to the conclusion that removing Charlotte Osei and her deputies was not the way to go.

“When President Mahama appointed Charlotte Osei after Afari Gyan retired, the NPP said he should not have applied just the law but home sense too…so I am appealing to him to also make use of same processes…,” he urged.
