Finance Minister and cousin of President Akufo Addo,Ken Ofori Atta,has dismissed his controversial nephew,Gabby Asare Otchere Darko, as a comical regime actor whose claims on governance should be taken with a pinch of salt.
The scandal-prone Finance Minister,made the allusion when he stated during his presentation of the 2018 budget review that members of the Minority should not look to social media for direction on the economic policies of the Akufo Addo government.
The much-loathed Gabby created a hailstorm of controversy when he sought to suggest that his uncle’s floundering government was mulling an increase in the Value Added Tax as a way of generating additional revenue to fund the NPP’s extravagant campaign promises.
The fulfilment of the much-trumpeted promises have proven disastrous as Akufo Addo has struggled to find non-existent resources to meet the expectations of voters.
The public went into a full attack mode,berating Akufo Addo for even giving VAT increases a thought.
His history as the foremost antagonist to the then NDC government’s plan to introduce the vital consumption tax made him the butt of jokes and derision especially on social media with many questioning his integrity.
The Minority in Parliament cautioned against the deleterious effect of such an increase on households and businesses.It was in apparent reference to the Minority’s criticism that Ofori Atta made the comments which have widely been intepreted as an attack on his loquacious nephew.
It remains to be seen how the irascible Gabby will respond to his uncle’s comments.
