COVID-19: Mortuary workers to demonstrate against government

The Mortuary Workers Association of Ghana has threatened a likely nationwide strike against the government if it fails to provide them with Personal Protective Equipments (PPEs) to save them from contracting the novel coronavirus

“We have kept quiet for a long time because we didn’t want to disgrace the government, but now we are going to take our decision and they will hear from us”. National Chairman of the Association Mr. Edward Mensah told Kingdom FM in an interview monitored by MyNewsGH.com.

The Association says its members have never been provided with the PPEs since the novel coronavirus was reported in the country while they challenged the government to prove to them that indeed it has been able to make any provision.

“Let the government and the Ghana Health Service (GHS) come out to show us whether the PPEs they distributed reached our people or not. If the minister says they have provided about 84,000 PPEs, I’m asking if it reached us”, Mr. Edward Mensah challenged.

“I can confidently say that we don’t have some, if the government says it has provided us, they should let us know exactly where they sent them”, he added.

According to him, the association on numerous occasions has struggled with authorities in the various health facilities and the GHS but their efforts have been futile.

He quizzed that if Nurses and Doctors are equipped without thinking about them then it is obvious that the government wants to kill them.

To him, the government has taken workers at the mortuary for granted thinking they will at all cost work whether there are measures to protect them or not but “that is not the issue”.

However, Mr. Edward Mensah indicated that his members are calm and still working.
