Christians Worldwide Today Mark Christmas

Christmas or Christmas Day meaning “Christ’s Mass” is an annual festival commemorating the birth of Jesus Christ. It means celebrating Christ.

Although the month and date of Jesus’ birth are unknown, by the early-to-mid 4th century the Western Christian Church placed Christmas on December 25 and observed it as a religious and cultural celebration among billions of people around the world.

Christmas is celebrated religiously by the vast majority of Christians, as well as culturally by a number of non-Christian people and is an integral part of the holiday season.
However, some Christian groups reject the celebration.

The birth of Jesus is described in the gospels of Luke and Matthew. The two accounts agree that Jesus was born in Bethlehem in the time of Herod the Great to a betrothed virgin whose name was Mary. “Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord.” Luke 2:11, the book of Isaiah also mentioned the birth of Christ “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counseller, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.”

In several countries, celebrating Christmas Eve on December 24 has the main focus rather than December 25, with gift-giving and sharing a traditional meal with the family.

While, some Christian groups reject the celebration, others have managed to maintain and promote the real reason for the season! Christmas is preceded with the festival of nine lessons and carols.

In Ghana traditional Christmas observances revolve around large family gatherings, feasts, singing, and church services. In the last few days before Christmas some people go back to their ancestral towns and villages for the celebration.

Following the run up to Christmas many churches blossom with flowers and palm branches: some congregations decorate a tree on the church grounds in honour of the coming holiday.

People greet one another and exchange good wishes for the holiday. Some people ramble joyfully through the streets, led by bands of musicians.
