Chief Justice’s referral of Dr. Ayine to General Legal Council because of a harmless comment is mind-boggling – Sammy Gyamfi

Lawyer Sammy Gyamfi, the National Communication Officer of opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), has reacted to the referral of Dr. Dominic Ayine to the General Legal Council.

As reported earlier by InsiderGH.com, Chief Justice Kwasi Anin Yeaboah has dragged Dr. Dominic Ayine to the Disciplinary Committee of the General Legal Council for allegedly berating the judiciary’s conduct during the 2020 election petition in a panel session.

The Supreme Court in a letter addressed to the Chairman of the Disciplinary Committee of the General Legal Council, accused Dr. Ayine of stating that “the Supreme Court’s failure to apply the rules of procedures as well as the consistent and continuous dismissal of the petitioners’ applications or reliefs were the basis of his assertion”.

Dr. Ayine made these comments during a panel discussion on “Presidential Election Petitions and their Impact on Africa’s Democracy”.

Reacting to this, Sammy Gyamfi, took his social media handles to share his views.

According to him, “in a democracy, every institution is subject to scrutiny and criticism, and the judiciary is no exception. Any attempt by the Judiciary to suppress dissent and victimize critical voices will be fiercely resisted.”

He went further to state that “the comment in question is an opinion Dr. Ayine is entitled to, and does not impugn the sanctity of the judiciary in any way. That, such a harmless comment will warrant Dr. Ayine’s referral to the Disciplinary Committee of the General Legal Council by the Chief Justice is mind-boggling.”
