Breaking: Court rules for LMVCA to picket at EC

A Circuit Court in Accra has given the green light for Let My Vote Count Alliance (LMVCA) demonstrators to picket at the Electoral Commission (EC) office on September 29, 2015.

Justice Essandoh, who presided over the case, set aside an earlier ruling sought by the Ghana Police Service, which banned the demonstrators from picketing at the EC.

The police argued that the EC office constituted a security installation and hence it was inappropriate for the demonstrators to picket there.

An attempt to enter the vicinity last two weeks led to violent clashes between the demonstrators demanding a new voters’ register and the police.

One person lost an eye and several others were injured; thus preventing the demonstrators from submitting their petition.

Per the ruling, the demonstrators can also picket at the premises of the Electoral Commission (EC).

According the court, the ex parte injunction secured by the Police had elapsed its 10-day lawful existence, hence the green light for organizers of the demonstration to picket around the EC.
