Auditor General Asked To Proceed On Leave

The President of the Republic, HE Nana Addo Dankwah Akufo-Addo, has directed the Auditor-General, Mr. Yaw Domelevo to proceed on his accumulated leave of one hundred and twenty-three (123) working days effective July 1, 2020.

In a statement signed by the Director Of Communications at the Presidency, Eugene Arhin, he explained that the President’s decision to direct Mr. Yaw Domelevo to take his accumulated leave is based on sections 20(1) and 31 of the Labour Act, 2003 (Act 651), which apply to all workers, including Public Office holders such as the Auditor-General.

“According to the act, a worker is entitled to annual leave with full pay, in a calendar year of continuous service, which cannot be relinquished or forgone by the worker or the employer,” the statement added.

Mr. Yaw Domelovo since his appointment as Auditor-General on 30th December, 2016 taken only nine working days of his accumulated annual leave of one hundred thirty-two (132) working days.

Mr. Domelevo is to hand over all matters relating to his office to Deputy, Mr. Johnson Akuamoah Asiedu.

As fishy as it may sound, it was legally explained that, based on sections 20(1) and 31 of the labour act, 2003 (651), every public office holder has to go on annual leave. As an entitlement, one would have to go on a paid annual leave in a calendar year of continuous service.
The former senior financial management specialist of the World Bank in Zimbabwe, Mr Daniel Yaw Domelevo has had nearly 20 working years’ experience in the public sector. Mr Domelevo who was appointed and sworn in as Auditor General in December 2016 has only taken a leave of 9 days so far out of the 132 days.

President Akufo-Addo took into consideration how Late President John Evans Atta-Mills directed Mr Edward Dua Agyeman the then auditor General to take his accumulated annual leave of 264 working days thus following his footsteps.
Despite it being explained this simply, one still thinks if all is well. The President while campaigning, promised Ghanaians of his goal to end corruption in Ghana but it seems things took a turn for the worst as soon as he was sworn into power. To the disappointment of voters, the bold ones are saying that things have gone from frying pan to fire.
In as much as this decision made by the President for Mr Domelevo to take his accumulated annual leave seems innocent and simple, it may be that this might as well be one of the cover-ups by the NPP government.
Being asked to hand over his duties to his deputy Mr Johnson Akuamoah Asiedu, Mr Domelevo is expected to start his leave on Wednesday the 1st of July.

 While this government may be good at covering things, the opposition NDC party also has a talent of fishing them out.
Hopefully, this calm decision is what it is and not the start of another drama for the NPP.
Ghanaians are still hoping that President Akufo-Addo will make true his promises. Hope may even be held out that, with elections drawing closer, this decision may be one of the ends to corruption. If not, we all live to see what is being covered.
