Atsu will be sorely missed | We’re a nation in grief – Akufo-Addo, Bawumia mourn

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is mourning the death of former Ghanaian international Christian Atsu.
The President on behalf of the Ghanaian people expressed his heartfelt condolences to the widow, children and family of the former winger.

Mr Akufo-Addo said Ghana football has lost one of its finest personnel and ambassadors adding that Atsu who will be sorely missed will be difficult to replace.

On behalf of the Government and people of Ghana, I extend sincere, heartfelt condolences to the widow, children and family of our fellow Ghanaian, Christian Atsu, on the sad news of his death. Ghana football has lost one of its finest personnel and ambassadors, one who will be difficult to replace. He will be sorely missed.

May his soul rest in the Bosom of the Almighty until the Last Day of the Resurrection when we shall all meet again. Amen!” Mr Akufo-Addo posted on Facebook.

Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia for his part posted “In a nervous state, we were hoping for the best of news. Now, we are a nation in grief, following news of the tragic demise of our illustrious son, Christian Atsu. “My deepest condolences to his widow, family and friends. “Rest in peace, Christian”

Atsu’s body was retrieved from under the rubble following the devastating earthquake in Turkey.

His death was confirmed by his agent, multiple reports in the Turkish media and his friend and colleague footballer, Mubarak Wakasu.

The footballer’s body was retrieved in the early hours of Saturday, 19 February 2023.

His Turkish agent, Murat Uzunmehmet announced the news at 5 am Ghana time, while his Ghanaian player Wakaso wrote “Rest Well,” in post on Facebook.

Nana Sechere who is also another agent of the player confirmed the body of the player had been retrieved.

The earthquake and aftershocksin southern Turkey and northern Syria are known to have killed more than 45,000 people.
