Akufo-Addo praises former Chief Justice Georgina Wood

President Nana Akufo-Addo has praised former Chief Justice Georgina Wood for her tenure as the head of the country’s judiciary at a dinner party in Accra.

The president singled out her fight against the judicial corruption that rocked the nation and how she handled it for praise.
“The measures she put in place and the way she worked to retain the confidence of the skeptical population will also stand her in good stead when history of the Ghanaian judiciary is recorded,” president Akufo-Addo said.

“She has restored the public confidence in one the critical institutions of our state, the judiciary, an important institution to the contribution of good governance in our country.
“I have every reason to be grateful to her.”

Georgina Wood worked with the Ghana Police Service as a deputy superintendent and public prosecutor for three years before joining the Judicial Service as a District Magistrate in 1974.

She rose through the Circuit and High Courts to become the presiding judge of the Appeal Court in 1991 and was then appointed to the Supreme Court on November 12, 2002.
She was made the country’s first chief justice in 2007.

She retired on June 7, 2017 and has since been appointed to serve on the council of state.
