Editor-in-chief of the New Crusading Guide Newspaper, Kweku Baako has said comments by New Patriotic Party (NPP)’s Member of Parliament (MP) for Assin North, Kennedy Agyapong about chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC) does not only denigrate the legislator but the Party as a whole.
Speaking on Peace FM’s morning show ‘Kokrokoo’, Mr. Baako said, “It is not good PR or public image for the party which Kennedy Agyapong belongs to.”
“He is not going to be a singular loser in any public assessment of the issue. It has a collateral effect on the party he belongs to,” he added.
Mr. Agyapong has been severely criticized for claiming that the EC boss, Charlotte Osei, exchanged sex for the position she occupies.
But the veteran journalist says it is not a fair critique to make of the EC chair.
He stated that instead of attacking the person of the EC Chair, the focus should rather be placed on challenges facing the conduct of this year’s elections and how to deal with them.
“I have had difficulties with how the EC has gone about certain issues and I have been clear in my mind that relative to issues concerning the elections and the EC’s conduct before she took over and during her tenure – even though short – I have had difficulties with it,” Mr. Baako added.
However, “Diverting the issue to politics of insult when indeed we should be looking at the integrity of the EC and its actions, doesn’t matter who is in charge or who the members are,” he said.
He stressed that issues about the integrity of the actions of the EC should not be diverted to unsubstantiated allegations of personalities on the EC, especially its Chair.
Member of Parliament elect of the Ningo-Prampram constituency, Sam George who also contributed to the discussion said the MP must be condemned by everyone.
“He is an MP and has an added responsibility to ensure that his speech is measured. His comments should rather unite than divide.
For me, my position on this matter is that he didn’t do well…this is not the first time,” he said.
The NPP’s silence on the issue, he indicated, is terrible and a cause for concern.
Mr. George expects that the party clarifies its position on the issue and that “Everyone has their democratic right to challenge the EC but to make it about her person is wrong. His comments should in no way be rationalized.”
