Joseph Osei-Owusu, popularly known as Joe Wise, an MP from the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has proposed that Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the outgoing Majority Leader, assume the role of Minority Leader in the 9th Parliament.
His suggestion follows the significant defeat of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the 2024 general elections, which has positioned the NPP as the minority faction in Parliament.
In a recent interview, Osei-Owusu emphasized the value of experience and continuity in parliamentary leadership. “Afenyo-Markin has proven himself as an effective and capable leader. At this critical juncture, we need someone with his expertise to guide the minority and ensure stability within
Parliament,” he stated.
Osei-Owusu drew parallels between Afenyo-Markin and his predecessor, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, who successfully transitioned from Minority Leader to Majority Leader during his tenure. He described Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu’s parliamentary journey as a testament to the importance of sustained leadership and institutional knowledge.
“This kind of progression strengthens both the political party and Parliament. It’s a model we should emulate by entrusting Afenyo-Markin with the minority leadership role,” Osei-Owusu added.
The call for Afenyo-Markin’s leadership comes at a pivotal moment for the NPP as they prepare to navigate the challenges of being in opposition. Osei-Owusu expressed concern about appointing an inexperienced leader to such a critical position.
“Bringing in a newcomer could upset the balance we’ve worked hard to maintain. We need someone who understands the intricacies of Parliament and can effectively manage the complexities of this role,” he explained.
Afenyo-Markin’s potential appointment as
Minority Leader is seen by many as a strategic move to leverage his extensive parliamentary experience and maintain cohesion within the NPP’s ranks during this transitional period.
