Former President John Dramani Mahama has emphasized the importance of continued cooperation between Ghana and China following a courtesy call from the Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, Tong Defa. The ambassador delivered a congratulatory message on behalf of Chinese President Xi Jinping.
Mahama noted that the relations between the two nations have been historically significant, dating back to the era of Ghana’s first president, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah. He highlighted China’s role in financing various infrastructure projects through Sino-Hydro, but acknowledged that challenges, such as debt defaults, have impacted Ghana’s credit rating.
In response, Mahama stressed that stabilizing the country’s currency is a priority. “We will work to restore the economy, boost growth, and reduce inflation,” he said.
Looking ahead, Mahama called for enhanced collaboration with Ghana’s partners, particularly China. He emphasized that once Ghana completes its economic transition, the country will engage China on technical cooperation and continue to benefit from initiatives like the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) and the Belt and Road Initiative.
