Alexander Ato Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, the incumbent Member of Parliament for Effutu and Majority Leader in Parliament, has retained his seat with a commanding lead in the recent elections.
Afenyo-Markin emerged victorious with 39,512 votes out of the 59,623 total ballots cast, outpacing his main challenger, Dr. James Kofi Annan of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), who secured 19,383 votes. An independent candidate, Louisa Buabeng, garnered a mere 81 votes. The margin of victory between Afenyo-Markin and Dr. Annan stood at 20,129 votes, underscoring the overwhelming support for the incumbent MP.
In the presidential contest within the constituency, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) led with 32,200 votes, defeating former President John Dramani Mahama of the NDC, who obtained 25,127 votes. However, the election recorded 1,348 rejected ballots.
Expressing his gratitude after the victory, Afenyo-Markin attributed his success to divine intervention and the unwavering support of his constituents. He thanked his constituency executives and supporters for their trust and reaffirmed his commitment to pursuing developmental projects that would enhance the lives of the Effutu people. He called on his political opponents to set aside differences and collaborate in fostering unity and progress in the area.
Dr. James Kofi Annan, the NDC parliamentary candidate, also reflected on the outcome, expressing gratitude to God for guidance and commending his party members for their dedication. He urged his supporters to remain calm and prioritize peace in the constituency despite the loss.
As the election dust settles, stakeholders in Effutu have been urged to work together to ensure the constituency’s development remains at the forefront of their agenda.
