President John Dramani Mahama has articulated his profound satisfaction with the remarkable progress achieved thus far in the comprehensive review of Ghana’s constitution, reiterating his government’s unwavering commitment to supporting this seminal endeavor.
On Tuesday, March 4, he hosted the esteemed eight-member Constitution Review Committee, chaired by the erudite Prof. H. Kwasi Prempeh, at its inaugural stakeholder engagement. The committee solicited Mahama’s sagacious insights on the constitutional review, seeking to glean his perspectives on areas necessitating amendment.
During the engagement, the committee presented a comprehensive briefing to Mahama on their progress, highlighting areas that necessitated additional support.
Mahama acknowledged their diligent efforts and underscored the imperative need for amendments in pivotal areas, including the election of Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs), the emoluments of Article 71 office holders, and the appointment of Ministers from Parliament. These reforms, he astutely observed, would serve to fortify Ghana’s governance structures, thereby enhancing the country’s democratic institutions and promoting accountability.
Mahama’s unequivocal commitment to constitutional review aligns with his previous stance, as he had pledged to perpetuate the review process if re-elected. Mahama’s emphasis on strengthening governance arrangements reflects his administration’s unwavering dedication to augmenting democratic institutions, promoting transparency, and ensuring that the country’s governance framework is robust, resilient, and responsive to the needs of Ghanaians.
