The Member of Parliament for Effutu, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has urged President-elect John Dramani Mahama to address alleged acts of violence and intimidation being carried out by supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) at collation centers across the country.
Speaking at a press conference organized by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) on Wednesday, December 11, Afenyo-Markin appealed to Mahama to intervene, emphasizing that such incidents undermine Ghana’s democratic progress.
“I call on His Excellency John Dramani Mahama to speak to his party supporters. This is not the democracy we’ve all worked hard for,” he remarked.
Afenyo-Markin accused NDC supporters of targeting NPP parliamentary candidates and officials in a bid to destroy evidence from the 2024 general elections. He alleged that some individuals were deliberately seizing and burning pink sheets, a crucial component of election documentation.
“Why is the NDC so fixated on destroying evidence? Why are they intent on seizing pink sheets and setting them ablaze?” he questioned.
The MP highlighted threats to the safety of NPP members, citing a recent incident involving the parliamentary candidate for Ablekuma North.
“The Ablekuma North candidate endured a terrifying ordeal, with groups besieging her residence, claiming she had electoral documents. She had to flee for her safety, and it was only through the timely intervention of the police that the situation was brought under control,” he disclosed.
Afenyo-Markin further criticized the NDC leadership, accusing them of tacitly supporting these actions despite publicly condemning political violence.
“The NDC leadership pretends to be unaware of the actions of their foot soldiers, but they are, in reality, encouraging this behavior,” he claimed.
The Effutu MP called for an end to such acts, urging all stakeholders to uphold the integrity of the electoral process and protect Ghana’s democracy.
