The Majority Leader, Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin has expressed disappointment over what he describes as a betrayal by Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin.
In an interview on Peace FM’s “Kokrokoo” show, Afenyo-Markin revealed his frustration with the Speaker’s recent decision to declare four parliamentary seats vacant, a move he feels was aimed at embarrassing the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government.
Recalling a conversation with the Speaker, Afenyo-Markin disclosed that he met Bagbin when the National Democratic Congress (NDC)
Minority registered it decision to petition Parliament to remove the four MPs who switched their political allegiance.
He indicated thath he proposed a path that would prevent disruptions in Parliament.
According to Afenyo-Markin, Speaker Bagbin gave his assurance that he would delay any action regarding the four MPs, which include Agona West, Amenfi Central, Fomena and Suhum Constituencies.
However, to his dismay, the Speaker went ahead to declare the four seats vacant, which Afenyo-Markin felt was a deliberate ambush against the Majority NPP.
“The Speaker betrayed me and I am pained. It hurts me deeply,” he said.
Afenyo-Markin described his swift reaction to the Speaker’s declaration as instrumental in preventing what he believes could have been a major embarrassment for the NPP.
“If I had not taken preemptive action, the Speaker would have embarrassed the entire NPP administration, but I thank God that the intel that I picked and I acted on it on time has saved this government,” he expressed.
