ACCOUNTING TO THE PEOPLE… PAGE 16 – 19

We closed yesterday with deliberations on the building of a permanent campus for the University of Health and Allied Sciences at Sokode Lokoe near Ho in the Volta Region and will move straight to the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in the Ashanti region.

The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology has the following projects either completed or at various stages of completion.

An ultra-modern central laboratory equipped with cutting edge equipment such as mass spectrometers, high capacity nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometers and analyzers.

There are also ultra-modern petroleum engineering laboratories equipped with drill simulators and other state of the art equipment.

A new veterinary hospital designed to be the most advanced in West Africa as well as a new KNUST teaching hospital to house the school of dentistry. These are some of the major accounts given by the president with regards to what he has done on this campus with the mandate we gave him three years ago.

Let us pass through the University of Energy and Natural Resources in the Brong Ahafo Region and see the accounts given to us by the president there.

A modern library, ICT complex, laboratory complex and new lecture halls with offices are underway and at various stages of completion.

In all, a total of 129 major projects including administration blocks, bungalows, hostels, lecture theatres and general landscaping are at various stages of completion on the campus.

Construction works on the University of Environment and Sustainable Development in the Eastern Region will also commence soon.

Lest we forget, under a $24 million project, three African Education Centres of Excellence are being established in Ghana. These are the West African Centre for Cell Biology of Infectious Pathogens (WACCBIP) at the University of Ghana, the West African Crop Improvement (WACCI) at the university of Ghana and Regional Centres of Excellence for Water and Environmental Sanitation at KNUST.

We end this episode by touching on the conversion of Polytechnics into Technical Universities. Work on this will progress with the expected passage of the Technical Universities Bill this year and conversion of each polytechnic will be based on assessment in areas of equipment, faculty and strong collaboration with industry. Currently, five Polytechnics are passed to commerce the programme this year.

This is a great move as government seeks to ensure that our tertiary institutions produce graduates who are ready to help improve productivity in the country.
