W/Region press corps in accident; Citi FM reporter unconscious

Some journalists in the Western Region, who covered President John Mahama’s activity on Monday, got involved in an accident leaving one in a critical condition.

The accident occurred on the road between Beahu and Akowen in the Ahanta West District at about 7:00pm, when the team was returning after covering the President’s commissioning of a new community day Senior High School.

One of the vehicles in the convoy is said to have crashed into the press van from behind.

Although the journalists sustained minor injuries, one of them, Obrempong Yaw Ampofo, who is Citi FM’s Western Regional Correspondent, has been hospitalized. There are no physical bruises on him but the impact of the crash appears to have affected him internally leaving him unconscious.

Doctors at the Kwesimintsim Polyclinic in Takoradi say they are monitoring his situation closely. Deputy Education Minister in charge of Tertiary Education Samuel Okudjeto Ablakwa visited Obrempong at the Hospital.

The vehicle carrying the journalists was provided to them by the Western Regional Communications branch of the NDC.

The accident comes barely two months after members of the presidential press corps were also involved in an accident on the Afienya-Dawhenya road in the Greater Accra Region,  leaving Samuel Nuamah of the Ghanaian Times Newspaper dead, and several others injured.
