‘We won’t allow EC to subvert the will of the people’

A communications team member of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) says the party will not leave anything to chance ahead of the crucial November 7 elections.

According to Samuel Abu Jinapor, the NPP together with the forces of democracy like Let My Vote Count Alliance pressure groups will not allow the Electoral Commission (EC) to subvert the will of the people.

His comment is in reaction to the formation of an 18-member election Steering Committee with the inclusion of some key members of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The Commission has since apologized after all the political parties including the ruling party chastised the EC at an Inter-Party Advisory Committee meeting Friday.

But on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme, Abu Jinapor opined that the recalcitrant posture of the EC Chairperson, Madam Charlotte Osei could be a recipe for disaster.

“The actions of the EC is disturbing and could have far-reaching consequences for the elections,” he warned.

The NPP youth activist could not fathom why the EC would nominate a known member of the NDC as a member of a committee to oversee the day-to-day activities of the elections.

Citing the aftermath of the 2012 elections to buttress his point, he said Ghana could have been plunged into chaos if his flagbearer, Nana Akufo-Addo had not taken a wise decision to accept the court verdict.

“It will not matter what the EC does; the people are determined to vote in their numbers and ensure that their vote counts”.

Abu Jinapor said the air of change is blowing across the country thus even if the NDC moves heaven on earth, it will still lose the election.
