We’ll resist any attempts to divide NPP – Group

The leadership of pro opposition group, Save NPP Now has given indication it will resist any attempt perceived to lead to divisions within the NPP.

The position of the group was contained in a statement issued following the suspension of the National Chairman of the party, Paul Afoko.
The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the NPP on Friday unanimously suspended Mr. Paul Afoko following a recommendation by the disciplinary committee for his alleged role in the unhealthy developments within the party.

Speaking on Eyewitness News on Friday, the Director of Communication for Save NPP Now, Baah Acheamfuor, stated the group’s dissatisfaction with the First National Vice Chairman of the NPP, Freddie Blay who according to him is causing division within the party,

“The situation is a tricky one in that we have elements like Freddie Blay who wants to send the NPP to the deep dungeon as he did to the CPP, but I think the youth of our party will stand against it to make sure such things do not work in our party, because he came to meet a formidable NPP,” he said.

He added, “Mr Blay as a lawyer knows that the National Chairman is the only one mandated to convene meetings of such nature in so far as he is around to carry out such responsibility. But we have people who want to put aside the constitution of this party and do their own thing, we will not accept that.”

Baah Acheamfour whose group disagrees with the decision of the NEC, further hinted of their intention to seek an interpretation of the decision in court. Although he could not tell when the case will be filed in court,

“We have spoken to our lawyers and we will seek an interpretation in court over the legality of the meeting which was held, if that is upheld, then the decision taken will be declared null and void…we believe in our flagbearer and he also believes in the rule of law, he will not fight but go to court and that is just what we will also be doing,” he said.

Divisions in NPP

Baah Acheamfour also confirmed comments alluding to divisions within the NPP.

He however justified his action to report Mr. Freddie Blay to the police following allegations of the diversion of some party funds by Mr. Blay and the party’s Treasurer, Abankwa Yeboah.

“There is no doubt about it unless you want to murk issues but if you want to be frank, the party is… people are now thinking about themselves and not thinking about the suffering of the Ghanaians…people have forgotten that the NPP is the only party that can rescue Ghana. It is about the fighting for power and to have control over the party resources, but we will not sit and look on unconcerned.”

Tribal Politics in NPP

Meanwhile the Save NPP Now group is seeking answers from the leadership of the NPP following what they say is an attempt to support perceptions that the NPP is an Akan party. A perception, Baah Acheamfuor believes had been demystified with the election of Paul Afoko as the party’s National Chairman,

“The development is going to support the misconception by the opposition party that the NPP is an Akan party. Initially, Kwabena Agyepong was also part of these but he is now been taken out. Why did they leave Kwabena Agyepong, is it because he is an Akan? Or because he is an Ashanti? Are you treating Paul Afoko because he is a Northerner? They should come out and justify if that is not their aim,” Baah Acheanfuor queried.
