We’ll fast-track replacement of aging tertiary inst. staff – Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama says he has directed the fast-tracking of processes to allow tertiary institutions to replace aging staff and also recruit new staff.

It would be recalled that the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) had threatened to put pressure on managements of public tertiary institutions to reduce student intakes if government fails to lift the ban on recruitment of essential staff.

Speaking at the University of Cape Coast on Thursday night as part of his “Accounting to the People Tour,” President Mahama said he had already directed the fast-tracking of the process.

“I know the issue of replacing aging faculty and fresh recruitments is one of the concerns to you and your colleagues in our universities. I can today announce that I have asked the Ministry of Education and Ministry of Finance to put together a workable programme to fast track recruitments and financial clearance procedures for staff in our institutions. I have also asked that this fast track arrangement covers staff validation process for all GES staff so that all teachers can receive their due beyond the three-month salary regime.”

Develop yourselves into entrepreneurs

President Mahama also encouraged the youth to take advantage of the enabling environment government is creating to develop themselves into becoming entrepreneurs.

He mentioned the GHc10 million Skill Development Fund which he says has been made available to support youth in various businesses.

The President is confident taking advantage of such opportunities will further enhance economic development for the country as a whole.
