Over 50 brilliant but needy students from selected basic schools in the Eastern Region are to benefit from the Presidential Award this year.

The award, initiated in 2011, is organized annually to help support brilliant but needy students in the Region to finance their education at the secondary level.

Mr Williams Gyawu-Darko, the Eastern Regional Coordinator for Basic Schools, in an interview with Ghana News Agency, said the scholarship is given to students that gain admissions to second cycle institutions but do not have the means to pay their fees due to poverty.

He said the Ghana Education Service (GES) in collaboration with the Presidency Award Committee conduct examinations and interviews for selected student who have been chosen for the award.

He said students that go through the processes are given laptops and citations to motivate and to serve as evidence to ensure their full participation as well.

Mr Gyawu-Darko urged students in basic schools to learn hard to be able to benefit from the award.
