Volta caucus in Parliament downplays NPP 30% vote target in V/R

The governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) Members of Parliament (MP) from the Volta Region have down played on a 30 percent vote target set by the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) ahead of the November 2016 polls.

According to the Volta caucus, the fact that the people of the region welcomed the NPP leadership to the region does not in anyway translates into votes.

Their comments come after the NPP flagbearer, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and his running mate, Dr Muhamudu Bawumia toured the Region to intensify their campaign ahead of the November polls.

The NDC MPs said they are not perturbed by the crowd the NPP Presidential Candidate and his running mate pulled in the course of their visit.

They believe they have in place a strategy to prevent the NPP from getting the 30 percent vote target from the region.

However, the NPP Volta Regional Chairman, Peter Amewu has described the optimism of the NDC MPs as laughable.

According to him, support for the even 26 MPs of the region is waning adding “Our MPs are not performing. Most of the MPs are going out of their seats.” Mr Amewu said during the visit of the NPP candidates, the people of the Region approached them and lamented about the hardship they are facing in the country.

“They themselves are telling us their feelings in terms of their living standard and we are also telling the people the corruption of the NDC,” he said.

He disclosed the people were initially not aware the NDC government is lavishly using taxpayers money to fund flamboyant lifestyles of its functionaries, but “they are realizing it and they are seeing the behavior of the MPs.”

He said the MPs have neither attracted any industry to be built in the region nor helped the chiefs and some persons who are pushing for the government to site an industry in the region.

He revealed “One of the chiefs [in the region] brought 2 billion development project to this country. The project went to Parliament over and over again with committees in Parliament but no single member of the MPs from the Volta region was able to defend this.”

The end of the Volta MPs is closer than they thought and the region is ready to fall for the NPP, he added.
