UNIVERSITY OF EDUCATION WINNEBA, CLOSED: AFENYO ONLY WANTS TO EMBARRASS PRESIDENT KUFOUR & OTHERS

This is clearly a savage political game masterminded by the Member of Parliament for Effutu Alex Afenyo Markin.
This is in an attempt to appoint a new Vice Chancellor for the University through the back door and destroy the business of the NDC chairman of the same constituency through cruel and misleading legal tactics.

This is being done by all means necessary even if it will cause grave devastation to students, employees and stakeholders of the University. He doesn’t have the school and constituency at heart as he is being led by greed, selfishness and treachery.

He is in court today as lawyer for Supi Kofi Kwayera the same strategy he used in the landmark supreme court case which led to the cancellation and postponement of the district Assembly elections in 2014 which cost the country a whopping 100million cedis and over.
They are asking the court to declare that the governing council which was in place in 2013 be declared illegal and render decisions taken by that council especially the appointment of the Vice Chancellor and finance officer as null and void.

One thing Hon. Markin and his cohorts are failing to acknowledge or don’t care about is that, the council did not take only two decisions and that if it is declared illegal, then the far reaching effect is that all decisions the council took will be illegal.
These include the award or honour of diploma, degrees, masters, doctorate and professorships. Also, the appointment of principal officers, lecturers, administrative workers, cleaners, security etc were all done by the approval of that council.

It is a known fact that Hon. Afenyo Markin preferred that the current pro vice chancellor of the university *Prof. Afful Broni* to take over as Vice chancellor when Prof. Asabre Ameyaw retired.
However, the search party settled on a long term employee and former pro vice chancellor Prof. Mawutor Avoke who is a full professor and was also in contest with Asabre Ameyaw when Prof. Anamuah Mensah retired.

Afenyo Markin being dissatisfied with the outcome, vowed to remove Prof. Avoke when the NPP win power.
Upon the NPP winning the 2016 election and coming into office, Afenyo Markin secured a letter from the senior minister Osafo Marfo after 7th January 2017 that Afenyo Markin ,as part of the transition process should be given access to the financial and other books of the University to audit and issue a report.
When it was pointed out to Mr. Osafo Marfo that the law and administrative procedure does not permit what he has authorised, Mr. Osafo Marfo withdrew the letter and apologized.

Markin not being satisfied with the outcome then petitioned the minister of education leveling baseless allegations against the vice chancellor which included a claim that the vice chancellor is employing and promoting only NDC sympathizers.
When the petition could not fly for its lack of merit, he had to stage a grand attack to get what he wants, this time making his real intentions known.

He is in court specifically asking that the court declare ;

A) the 2013 governing council illegal and the vice chancellor and finance officer step aside as they were appointed by an illegal governing council.

B) the pro vice chancellor Prof. Aful Broni as acting vice chancellor.

C) Specific contracts granted to the company of a road contractor and Chairman of NDC in the Effutu constituency illegal and the company be directed to refund the money it received for the road it has already constructed.

Its important to point out that the pro vice chancellor whom he wants to be declared acting vice chancellor was approved for his second term by the same governing council as well as the vice chancellor that he prays the court to declare illegal.

So as its stands, the court ordered that the injunction be placed on the two principal officers, their agents and assigns. The question then is, if they are illegal, can they appoint persons legally and those persons work in whose name?

Hence, the decision by the the senior staff, Deans, UTAG and heads of departments to close down the school to avoid being cited for contempt of court.

So here we are, where are the wise men when, greed, selfishness, jealousy, power drunkenness and treachery is leading one man and a few cohorts to put the future of thousands in jeopardy.

*One will recall that, on Thursday August 12 2014, the University conferred honorary certificates and awards to Former President Jerry John Rawlings, Former Nigerian President, General Abdulsalami Abubakar and the first Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Jophus Anamoah Mensah for their sterling performance in their respective leadership roles which impacted positively at their respective countries and that of the University.*

*As if that is not enough, the same University on friday August 14 2015 conferred same honorary award to Former President John Agyekum Kufuor for his phenomenal contribution to the growth and development of UEW. Per the reliefs Afenyo-Markin is seeking from the court through his constituency organizer as plaintiff, President Kufuor who is a former leader of Ghana and his own political party, the NPP, as well as the named eminent Presidents and the former Vice Chancellor of the University do not deserve those awards and must all be redrawn back from them, since they are possessing illegal certificates and honorary awards given to them by an illegal governing council.*

How petty and pathetic !

It’s like the proverbial goat which thinks it’s scratching itself on its masters wall but never knew it was destroying its own skin. Attitude like these from him culminated in President Akuffo Addo’s decision not to appoint him a ministerial nor deputy ministerial position in this current administration. Arrogance and self sufficiency has always defined him.

It’s further unfortunate that the *elders and teeming youth of Winneba* are silent in all these embarrassing happenings, which has future dire consequences on the name and image of the University, which can render the University an unfavourable option to prospective applicants in future.

It’s time Afenyo-Markin is told political positions are transient, and the name and legacies a politician leaves behind for generation, is extremely important than the office he once occupied.

His predecessors were not that nuisances and talkative, as he is gradually becoming in the annals of contemporary Ghanaian political landscape.

What a shame.
