Tokyo: First Lady talks about success story; plans to end child marriage

The First Lady Lordina Mahama has been outlining some success stories on promoting women and child rights since she took over the leadership of the organisation of African First Ladies against HIV and AIDS.

Addressing Wives of African Heads of Mission, female Ambassadors and leaders of Japanese women groups in Tokyo, Japan, the First Lady talked about the out-dooring of a campaign to end child marriage.

Citing the case of Ghana, Mrs. Mahama said government’s policy to ensure girls stay in school is being pursued through the expansion of access to secondary education. With this, more girls are remaining in school beyond the basic school level.

The First Lady pointed out how her foundation, the Lordina Foundation is collaborating with the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection to empower women with the needed skills and also promote children’s rights.

Mrs. Mahama also spoke of how her foundation organizes periodic medical outreach programmes in deprived communities in Ghana, during which the women are screened on cervical and breast cancer and taken through HIV tests.

Another landmark achievement, the first Lady talked about, was the foundation’s effort to assist elderly women accused of being witches.

She said with the help of government, a vocational school is being constructed in the camp to teach the women and their children useful skills to make them self-sufficient.
