Survey: 71% of bankers perceive mobile money services as a threat

A PWC survey of the banking industry has revealed that 71 percent of bankers perceive the penetration of mobile money services as both a threat and an opportunity.

At a forum in Accra,the Second Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr. John Asiama, said the Central Bank is ready to regulate the mobile money industry for the mutual benefit of the telecommunication companies and the banking sector.

Records indicate that 10 million people in Ghana have so far registered for the mobile money services through out the country.

Out of this number, four-point-four (4.4) million have mobile money accounts.

Records also indicate that there are 94,000 active mobile money agents, with over 24 million transactions taking place every month.

This was disclosed at a mobile money forum in Accra. It was under the theme, ” Mobile Money and Banking: Complementary or Competitive.
