Stop heightening the Agogo and Fulani feud

The Ashanti Regional Minister, Hon. John Alexander Ackon has called on the media to be circumspect in their reportage on the Fulani and Agogo menace. He made the call when he spoke with Kwame Tutu on Rainbow Radio following a report in the section of the media that, he had ordered Fulani herdsmen to return all arms and ammunition to the Regional Security Council (REGSEC).

According to him, the continuous heightening of the menace will make it difficult to resolve the long standing feud between residents and the herdsmen. He explained that, no timelines can be given in evicting the nomadic herdsmen hence the communities have been asked to understand the difficulties in dealing with the matter.

Hon. John Alexander Ackon noted, the Concomba residents at Esikura had lived with the Fulani herdsmen in the area for many years without any challenge until the nomadic herdsmen joined them.

He explained, most of the nomadic herdsmen from the accounts of the residents are those who always wield guns and attack them. The Minister said he never gave an ultimatum for the Fulani herdsmen to hand over their guns to the security, rather he called on the residents to report to the police if they identify any of the nomadic herdsmen known for attacking residents.

Hon. John Alexander Ackon, said it would be difficult to evict all Fulani herdsmen and their cattle from Agogo due to the complex nature of the situation.

However, efforts are in place to manage the situation better and in doing so, the Ashanti Regional Security Council is working closely with the Eastern Regional Council to resolve the invasion of nomadic herdsmen holistically. Residents in Agogo led by the Local Traditional Council, the Local Council of Churches and the youth embarked a demonstration to drum home their demand for the eviction of Fulani herdsmen. The feud between Agogo and Fulani herdsmen has so far led to the death of some two people and the destruction of farmlands.
