Managing Editor of the Insight Newspaper, Kwesi Pratt Jnr, says he cannot comprehend why critics are always descending on the Electoral Commission (EC) chairperson Charlotte Kesson-Smith Osei anytime there are issues about the activities of the Commission.
According to Kwesi Pratt, whatever decision the EC Chair makes it is obviously in consultation with the other members of the Commission hence a collective one.http://ghanapoliticsonline.com
The recently inaugurated 18-member Election Steering Committee has been hit by allegations that it was made up of card holding members of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), prompting the withdrawal of Dr Karl Mark Arhin, the Deputy Executive Secretary of the National Service Scheme.
A political pressure group, the Let My Vote Count Alliance, as well as several political parties, have called on the EC to disband the committee entirely, but the commission stated Thursday that it was not considering that option.
On Friday however, reports emerged about the suspension of the committee following a meeting with the various political parties after an Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting.
But the EC on Saturday made a u-turn again, saying reports of the suspension of its steering committee are “erroneous” and “should be disregarded”.http://ghanapoliticsonline.com
The EC in a statement released less than 24 hours after the meeting and signed by its director of Public Relations, Christian Owusu Parry says its decision has been misconstrued.
Speaking on Radio Gold’s ‘Alhaji Alhaji’ Saturday, Kwesi Pratt stated: “I don’t understand why every decision by the EC is being personalized and directed at Charlotte Osei.
“Is she the only person who makes up the Commission? I think we should be fair to the lady. If we do that, it won’t take long before all our State institutions and national institutions will be smeared,” he warned.
