Special Prosecutor’s Office To Be Ready In December

The proposed office of special prosecutor which will handle corruption related cases will start working in six months’ time, President Akufo-Addo has said.

Addressing the Ghanaian community in UK Friday, the president said the office is key his resolve to fight corruption, saying state funds are leaking into private pockets.

He said amounts equated to the budgetary supports Ghana gets from its donor partners have found it way into private pockets and accounts, saying the status quo cannot be allowed to continue.

“We made the commitment that we would establish an Office of Special Prosecutor who will have the mandate to investigate and prosecute acts of corruption in the public service.
“We made that commitment because public opinion in Ghana have seem to not have confidence in the Attorney General being a political officer to be able to manage such processes of investigation and prosecution.
“This meeting of parliament that has begun, God willing you will see the law being passed in this meeting. Within three months, latest six months, the office itself will be up and running.”
President Akufo-Addo, who swept to power on the back of massive unemployment and corruption, said the office has become necessary because of the project he put before the electorate in the 2016 elections.
“Reason why such this is such an important matter for us is because of the process the project that we have put before our people,” he said.
He also noted that he wants to put “Ghana in a situation beyond aid. We want to be able to mobilise Ghana’s resources to handle the process of it development.

“We are not a poor country, he stressed. “We are not a poor country. We are a country of considerable resources. 37 million people, hardworking people in a land which is blessed with a lot of what nature has given us.
“If we handle the resources of our land honestly and intelligently, my Goodness, there is no limit to where we cannot go.”
